Joanna Moore founded the beloved Axe restaurant in Santa Monica in 1990. After the 1994 earthquake Axe relocated to Venice beach and thrived for another 15 years. An originator of slow, seasonal fare with a deep commitment to sustainable ecological practices, Axe was at the beginning of a food movement, set in a serenely beautiful space.
Her brunch-service multigrain pancakes developed a near cult following and after closing the restaurant and moving to rural Northern California, Joanna has been doing pop-ups and events. These hearty, healthy and not-too-heavy pancakes are made with thoughtfully sourced ingredients from small and local farmers.
With a sustained interest in conservancy and responsible land management, Joanna is in the planning stages of her next project, bringing her vision and experience from cultivation to community.
